ICE SCULPTURES IN DENVER, COLORADO
Few structures capture the essence of beauty that ice sculptures are capable of, from the moment they start until the final product is complete. Regardless what time of the year they’re made, the utility and purpose of an ice sculpture far outweighs the time it takes to carve them. The ice sculptures we’ve made are not only breathtaking, they’re more affordable than you think.
Sculpting ice comes with numerous complications mainly because of the variability and volatility of ice’s natural properties. In warm or cold weather, enjoying sculpted ice means you treasure the artists responsible for its creation.
HOW ARE ICE SCULPTURES MADE?
By using chainsaws, special bits made for a die grinder, chisels, and handsaws, artists can form shapes from memory, or by having the shape lightly etched on the ice block. Sculptors must work quickly since the variance in temperatures will affect the final shape they’re trying to achieve.
Our professionals use top-grade tools that get the job done with the least amount of error. We’ll carve the ice onsite or deliver the sculpture to a specific location.
Size and complexity will dictate how long it takes for ice sculptures to be finalized. In general, 3 to 12 hours is normal for high-quality sculptures, with longer time necessary for intricate designs. Shorter times are possible if the sculpture is small or requires less cutting or precision.
HOW MUCH DOES AN ICE SCULPTURE WEIGH?
Depending on the final design, expect ice sculptures to weight between 150 and 250 pounds, with detailed designs weighing slightly less. Sizes will range between 12” inches to over 30 feet tall, depending on how large the block of ice starts out as.
The smaller designs will be used for centerpieces to compliment flowers and other table décor, with an average size of 12” to 17”. Mid-sized sculptures are best for adorning boats or to entertain guests at parties, these are 20” to 30”. Large sculptures are used as focal points during auctions or other black-tie type of events and are between 36” to 60”.
Other sculptures meant for showpieces can get as tall as your imagination, although we’d need to bring several sculptures to a carving of that size.
HOW LONG DO ICE SCULPTURES LAST?
Typical life span for the ice sculptures we make are between 4 to 6 hours if displayed indoors. This time would decrease should the display be outdoors, especially in excessive heat. If a sculpture is displayed outside, it should be placed on a leveled and cool surface in the shadiest part of the event. This will increase life span by an hour or so.
The end result is melted ice is water. It takes some time for the entire block to melt away. We suggest placing some form of water runoff or drip tray underneath the sculpture to catch water as it runs lose. Smaller ice designs could be placed over a bucket or flower pot to catch the water during the melting phase.
